Michael renewed his contract with Sony for $65 million in March 1991, beating Neil Diamond's renewal with Columbia Records. Dangerous was certified 8x Platinum in the US and sold 32 million copies worldwide in 2018. "Black or White" was the album's highest-charting song: it was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for 7 weeks. "Remember The Time" was number three on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. At the end of 1992, Dangerous was the best-selling album worldwide with "Black or White" the best-selling single of the year worldwide at the Billboard Music Awards.

He founded the Heal the World Foundation in 1992. It brought underprivileged children to the Neverland Ranch and sent millions of dollars to help children threatened by, war, poverty, and disease. Part of the proceeds from the Dangerous World Tour went to the charity. In January 1993, he won three AMAs: Favorite Pop/Rock Album, Favorite Soul/R&B Single ("Remember the Time"), and the first to win the International Artist Award of Excellence. He won the "Living Legend Award" at the 35th Grammy Awards in February. In June 1995, the double album HIStory: Past, Present and Future, was released. The album debuted at number one and certified for eight million shipments in the US. It's the best-selling multi-disc album of all time, with 20 million copies (40 million) sold worldwide. It received a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. "Scream" received two Grammy nominations, winning Best Music video (Short form) in 1996. "You Are Not Alone", holds the Guinness world record for the first song to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

On December 18, 2003, Jackson was charged with seven counts of intoxicating a minor with alcoholic drinks. He pleaded not guilty. The People v. Jackson Trial began on January 31, 2005, and lasted until the end of May. He was acquitted of all counts on June 13. In December 2009, the FBI released files Jackson. They found no evidence of criminal conduct on his behalf.
