The Bodyguard, and other projects

Whitney made her first film appearance in The Bodyguard in 1992 with Kevin Costner. People liked that it has an interracial relationship, and others thought it was cheesy because they were destined to get together because they spent a lot of time together. Still, it grossed more than $120 million in ticket sales in the US, and over $410 million worldwide. She was nominated for a Razzie Award for Worst Actress, but once again, The Bodyguard: The Original Soundtrack, performed exceptionally. It ranked second on the Billboard 200 and Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in the first week, then topped boths charts in the second week, selling almost 300,000 copies. "I Will Always Love You" is the most popular track, originally recorded by Dolly Parton, Houston's version is considered as almost her own. Another milestone under her belt, the single was certified 4x platinum, making her the first woman to have a song reach that level in RIAA history, best-selling single by a woman in the U.S., and best-selling single of all time by a female solo artist with 20 million copies sold. It also received a Grammy for Record of the Year. The Bodyguard World Tour made over $33 million between 1993-1994, the third highest for a female entertainer.

She continued to act in more films, such as Waiting to Exhale, The Preacher's Wife, and Cinderella (1997). The Waiting to Exahle soundtrack was number one on U.S. Billboard 200 for five weeks and Top R&B Albums for ten weeks, and certified 7x platinum in 1996. "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)", written by Babyface, won a Grammy for Best R&B Song. Angela Bassett won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Motion Picture and Loretta Devine won for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. The Preacher's Wife soundtrack is the best-selling gospel album of all time, spending 26 weeks on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart. The soundtrack featured the Georgia Mass Choir, Monica, Faith Evans, New Edition, as well as Cissy.
